This Spring Break 2

Posted by spartlow on April 29, 2010

This Spring Break I went to the Redwoods in Northern California and the Oregon Caves.  The Oregon Caves had many different formations like stalactites, stalagmites, and curtains.  The entire cave was actually made of marble, but the formations were a different kind of mineral called calcite that covered the marble. The caves were a 90 minute tour underground.  I saw two bats and lots of moths.  There were over 500 steps!

The entire cave is marble, but covered with formations.

There are stalagtites and flowstone covering the ceiling.

Cave bananas? No. These are stalagtites covered in flowstone!

Later, we went to Lady Bird Johnson Redwood Grove.  Lady Bird Johnson is one of the reasons why there are Redwoods still left.  Loggers were clear cutting them at an enormous rate.  Lady Bird collaborated with fellow environmentalists and raised money to preserve the Redwoods.  As we were walking the trails, we noticed many different species of plants, not just Redwoods!  There were ferns, flowers, and a plant that looked like giant clover.
